happy birthday to me

Last night we had our good friends Jan, Dorine, Marina and Haven over for dinner. we made a delicious paella to celebrate my birthday, Marina's birthday and our friendship. Jan recently accepted a position working for the X Prize in Seattle. The family will be moving West soon and we will miss them all but are confident that our friendship will survive the distance.

Today, which is my actual birthday (44) Jon had to work so Olive and I had a special day together. First we went to Mirabelles for breakfast. Olive wore her "lumberjack hat"..."just in case." Our friends Kathy and Lucie joined us for breakfast.

Later in the day we went to Violet's birthday party where there was face painting and t-shirt making. Most of the other kids had flowers, butterflies, people and clowns on their shirts. Olive's theme was Frankenstein and monsters. Hmmm....

Tonight, Jon and I are going out with grown-ups. Yeah!!

These pictures are the first taken with my new birthday camera. Thanks Jon and Olive!!

how babies are NOT made

The other night at dinner we had this conversation:

Olive: Mom, when I grow up I don't want to have any babies.
Mom: OK honey. You don't have to.
Olive: But how can I NOT have babies.
Mom: Don't get pregnant and you won't have any babies.
Olive: But how can I NOT get pregnant.
Mom: Don't let any sperm get into your uterus.
Olive: What is sperm again? Is that baby seeds?
Mom: Yes, honey. Sperm is like baby seeds.
Olive: But how can I NOT get any baby seeds in my uterus.
Mom: Well Olive, only a man can put sperm into your uterus, so don't let a man put sperm in your uterus and you will not get pregnant and you will not have any babies.
Olive thought about that for a moment. Then she turned to Jon and said:
Daddy, do NOT put any sperm in my uterus!
Jon choked, turned pale and was speechless.

a bad case of the dots

We think it is a virus. Olive came down with this condition this morning after a eerie 15 minute silence during a play date with Mari.

You might not be able to tell, but oddly, each blue spot says "great job." Hmmm....if it doesn't clear up by tomorrow we will consult the CDC.

getting in the mood

Tomorrow we shall see if we shall ski.
Tonight Olive was rehearsing her role as beginner skier.
Clearly - she is excited. The flaming helmet sealed the deal.

Check back with me tomorrow for a full report.
